INDIANAPOLIS - Tufts sophomore diver Johann Schmidt (Nanuet, NY) placed fifth in the three-meter event at the 2012 NCAA Div. III Swimming & Diving Championships on Wednesday to earn All-American honors (top eight). He scored 490.95 points in the final, putting Tufts in 22nd place with 14 points after one day at the national meet.
In his second NCAA apperance, the fifth is Schmidt's best finish thus far. He is now a two-time All-American in the three-meter event including a sixth last season. Earlier in the day Wednesday, Schmidt had earned a preliminary score of 507.55 off the three-meter board that was fourth in the NCAA field.
The NESCAC winner off both boards for the second year in a row this season, Schmidt will be in the one-meter event on Friday. He had an honorable mention All-American effort (9th through 16th) in one-meter with a 12th-place finish at the 2011 NCAA meet.
Senior co-captain Owen Rood (Branford, CT) was also in action on Wednesday. He missed qualifying for the final in the 50 freestyle by the narrowest of margins. Rood's time of 20.67 seconds tied for 17th, with only the top 16 advancing to the final. The 16th place time of 20.66 by Johns Hopkins University's Dylan Coggin was 0.01 faster than Rood's.
Later this week, Rood swims in the 100 breaststroke on Friday and the 100 freestyle on Saturday. He is the sixth seed entering the 100 free.
The 2012 NCAA Div. III Championships at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) run through Saturday.
