INDIANAPOLIS – Sophomore Mia Greenwald (Park City, UT) of the Tufts women's swimming team enjoyed a fantastic day at the 2012 NCAA Div. III Championships on Thursday. She ended up ninth in the 100 butterfly and 14th with the 400 medley relay and finished the meet as a three-time honorable mention All-American.
Greenwald entered the 100 fly as the 26th seed with a season's-best time of 57.44 seconds. She topped that by nearly a second in the NCAA preliminaries on Thursday morning with a 56.47 time that was 16th and earned her a spot in the consolation final. It also broke her own school record from last year (56.95). She was even better Thursday night, timing 55.33 seconds to win the consolation final, earn ninth place overall and break the Tufts record again. Her time was actually sixth-best among the 16 swimmers in the championship and consolation finals, but each round is scored separately and ninth is the best she could finish.
Also on Thursday, the Tufts 400 medley relay foursome of first-year Samantha Sliwinski (Weymouth, MA), sophomore Jenny Hu (Oakland, CA), Greenwald and senior Courtney Adams (Lake Forest, IL) placed 14th with a school-record 3:54.60 time. That's an honorable mention All-American performance. They were the 23rd seed in the event, but earned a spot in the consolation final with the 13th-best preliminary time of 3:55.06. Both the preliminary and finals finishes topped the previous Tufts record of 3:55.22 from the NESCAC meet.
On Wednesday, Sliwinski, Hu, Greenwald and Adams had combined to finish 14th in the 200 medley relay. Their time of 1:47.04 in the consolation final earned honorable mention All-American honors. They had put together at 1:46.45 time in the preliminaries that was 11th best earlier on Wednesday.
The Jumbo foursome also swam the 200 freestyle relay on Thursday and was 24th in a 1:38.68 time. Hu's time of 1:07.20 in the 100 breaststroke was 27th on Friday. To complete their NCAA participation on Saturday, they lined up in the 400 freestyle relay with Adams, Sliwinski, Greenwald and Hu recording a 3:36.99 time for 25th place.
With 21 points scored overall, the Jumbos tied for 28th as a team at the NCAA meet. In addition to Greenwald's three honorable mention All-American awards, Sliwinski, Hu and Adams earned two each.
The 2012 NCAA Div. III Championships were at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI).
