MIDDLEBURY, VT - Sophomore John Wawer (Litchfield, CT) shot 75 on Saturday and freshman Jay Wong (Darien, CT) carded a 76 on Sunday as the Tufts golf team finished 17th out of 25 teams at the 29th Annual Duke Nelson Invitational hosted by Middlebury College on Saturday and Sunday.
Playing on the par-71 Ralph Myhre Golf Course, Tufts' best four scores totaled 325 on Saturday and 326 on Sunday for a 651 final. The Jumbos were one stroke behind 16th place Western New England (650) and three in front of 18th place Babson (654).
Wawer and Wong finished with identical two-round totals of 158 to tied for 29th individually out of 127 golfers. Wawer followed his 75 on Saturday with an 83 on Sunday. Wong scored 82 on Saturday before Sunday's 76.
Freshman Nick Dorian (Greenwich, CT) scored third for the Jumbos, shooting 84 on Saturday and 81 on Sunday to tie for 74th with a 165. Sophomore Alex Zorniger (Dayton, OH) shot 84-86-170 for Tufts.
RPI won the team title with a 607 score. Greg Scott from Hamilton College was the individual medalist at 73-72-145.
The Jumbos play at the Williams Invitational next weekend (Sep. 22-23).
