Women's Basketball Rolls Along to 16-0 with 64-40 Non-Conference Win Against Wheaton

Box Score
Kelsey Morehead was the sixth different Jumbo to lead the team in scoring this year

MEDFORD - After moving up two spots to #6 in the D3Hoops.com national poll earlier in the day, the Tufts women's basketball team improved to 16-0 with an easy 64-40 victory over Wheaton College in a non-league game on Monday night at Cousens Gym.

Sophomore guard Kelsey Morehead (Foster City, CA) led the Jumbos with 12 points on 5 for 8 shooting. She also had three assists. Twelve players scored overall for Tufts, including eight points and six rebounds off the bench from junior Ali Rocchi (Fairfield, CT) and seven points, four steals, and three blocks from sophomore Hayley Kanner (Scarsdale, NY).

Wheaton was paced by first-year Kiley Shoemaker's (Fayetteville, NY) effort, totaling 12 points, seven rebounds, and four blocks. The Lyons won the battle of the boards 37-33, with sophomore Kirsten Ferrari (Lynn, MA) adding six rebounds. The loss was the fourth in five games for Wheaton (6-9).

As they have often done during this best-ever start to a season, Tufts mounted a big first-half lead and did not look back. Tonight they surged to an 18-4 advantage eight minutes into the first half, with sophomore Hannah Foley's (Acton, MA) seven points leading the way.

Wheaton responded with a three-pointer by junior Melissa McLaughlin (Spindale, NC) to close the gap to 18-7 at the 10-minute mark, but that's as close as they would get over the remainder of the game.

The Jumbo advantage was 33-14 at intermission. Kate Barnosky (Huntington Station, NY) led Tufts with nine points at halftime. Shoemaker was at eight points and six rebounds after the first 20 minutes for the Lyons.

Wheaton opened the second half with a 7-3 spurt to get within 15 at 36-21 after a three-point play by sophomore Abbie Brickley (Sandy, UT). The margin was 16 (41-25) after a Wheaton layup by junior Lauren McClelland (Scituate, MA) at the 11:44 mark.

However, the Jumbos stretched the margin to 20 points at 51-31 on senior co-captain Bre Dufault's (Hampden, MA) jumper at 7:17 and it never dipped below that mark the rest of the way.

Tufts finished the game with 20 points off 27 Lyons' turnovers. They defended with 17 steals, including four by junior Caitlin McClure (Arlington, VA). Brickley ended the night with seven points for Wheaton.

The Jumbos return to NESCAC action on Friday night when they host Wesleyan at 8 pm. Wheaton welcomes MIT for NEWMAC action next on Wednesday night.
