CAMBRIDGE - Freshman Michael Winget (Shelburne, VT) won the 50 backstroke, placed second in the 100 back, and took third in the 100 butterfly to lead the Tufts men's swimming & diving team's effort at MIT on Saturday. The Jumbos fell in a dual meet to the Engineers, 255-101.
Tufts was returning to action for the first time since an invitational at MIT on December 1. The loss drops their dual meet record to 2-2. The talented, #1 nationally ranked MIT squad is now 6-0.
Tufts scored first-place points in four events. Winget won the the 50 back in a time of 24.49 seconds. Junior Christian Jones (Lewisville, NC) had an impressive performance in the 1,000 freestyle with a 9:52.16 win.
Winget's second in the 100 back came in 52.69 seconds. The third-place showing was a 52.85 in the 100 butterfly.
Jumbo junior diver Johann Schmidt (Nanuet, NY) competed uncontested in both events. He earned first-place points in one-meter with a 393.50 score and in three-meter with a 361.30 total.
Head coach Adam Hoyt's Jumbos also recorded three runner-up finishes. Freshman Cam Simko's (Summit, NJ) 1:44.56 was second-best in the 200 freestyle. He was just 0.03 out of first place. Junior Eric Douglas (Southbury, CT) was second to the wall in the 50 butterfly at 24.09 seconds. Junior Drew Berman (Miami, FL) timed 27.75 seconds in the 50 breaststroke for second.
The Engineers won all but two of the events, sweeping first through third place in a number of them. Five different MIT swimmers won two of their individual events.
The Jumbos get right back at it tomorrow when they travel to Williams for a NESCAC tri-meet with the Ephs and Wesleyan beginning at 1 pm. MIT swims at Amherst next Saturday.
