Junior Sami Bloom returned to action and won the one-meter diving event

CAMBRIDGE - Jenny Hu (Oakland, CA) continued an excellent junior season thus far for the Tufts women's swimming & diving team with two wins in a dual meet on Saturday afternoon at MIT. The Jumbos, returning to action for the first time in over a month, lost to the fifth-ranked Engineers 266-109.
Hu was the fastest in both the 100 backstroke, with a 1:07.51 time, and in the 50 breaststroke at 30.65 seconds. She also added a third-place showing in the 100 individual medley swim with a 1:04.10 time.
The Jumbos welcomed back junior diver Sami Bloom (Wilton, CT) after a semester abroad. She won the one-meter event with a 282.75 score. Bloom was also the runner-up in three-meter diving, earning 284.60 points.
Many Jumbos swam in off events to get ready for the team's conference meet tomorrow at Williams with Wesleyan which begins at 1 pm.
Senior tri-captain Christine Garvey (West Chester, PA) posted a pair of second-place finishes for head coach Nancy Bigelow's team at MIT. Her 2:12.66 in the 200 butterfly and 5:21.96 in the 500 freestyle both scored four runner-up points for the Jumbos.
First-year Shannon McHenry (Yardley, PA) added a second in the 1,000 freestyle with her 11:07.67 touch.
Senior tri-captain Lizz Grainger (Nashville, TN) registered a pair of thirds for Tufts, finishing the 50 fly in 27.97 seconds and the 100 fly in 1:01.31. Junior Ellen Gage (Storrs, CT) did the same, placing third in both the 100 backstroke (1:11.01) and the 200 breaststroke (2:33.94).
The Engineers won 16 of the 20 events and took two or three of the top spots in several of them. Senior Anna Kokensparger won all three of her events, while first-year Kate Yu and Katie Siegel won two of their events.
While Tufts (1-4) travels for NESCAC action tomorrow, the Engineers (6-1) face NESCAC's Amherst next Saturday.
