MEDFORD - The Tufts women's swimming & diving team had the best time or score in all 16 events as they posted a 169-98 victory over Wheaton College in their final dual meet of the season at Hamilton Pool on Saturday afternoon.
Eleven members of the Tufts team were honored on Seniors Day prior to the meet. That included Aiai Ren (Acton, MA), tri-captain Lizz Grainger (Nashville, TN), tri-captain Christine Garvey (West Chester, PA), and Kathryn Sullivan (Bloomington, IN), the senior foursome which had the 200 medley relay's fastest time of 1:43.99 to finish the meet.
Garvey, junior Jenny Hu (Oakland, CA), first-year Maddie Golison (Long Beach, CA), junior Samantha Sliwinski (Weymouth, MA), and junior diver Sami Bloom (Wilton, CT) all had the best times or scores in two events each for Tufts, which finished its dual meet season at 3-5 with the victory.
Sliwinski and Hu had teamed with first-year Samantha Swinton (Orinda, CA) and sophomore Kathryn Coniglio (Branchburg, NJ) to open the meet by winning the 200 medley relay for Tufts in a 1:52.54 time. Sliwinski added firsts in the 50 freestyle (25.30) and the 100 backstroke (1:02.87). Hu swept the breaststrokes, touching first in the 50 at 30.97 seconds and in the 100 with a 1:09.15 time.
Garvey, who won the 200 freestyle early with a 2:00.02 swim, was later the fastest contestant in the 500 freestyle. Her 5:20.21 time did not count towards the Tufts score as the Jumbos were already well ahead in the meet. Likewise, Golison earned nine first-place points with her 1:01.98 in the 100 butterfly and had a 2:16.69 in the 200 individual medley that she swam as an exhibition.
Bloom compiled scores of 291.37 in the one-meter event and 304.80 in three-meter for diving wins.
Adding to their relay victories, Coniglio was first to touch in the 100 freestyle with a time of 55.65 seconds. Grainger's 28.09 was first to the wall in the 50 butterfly.
KJ Kroetch (Lafayette, CA) also fastest in her event on Seniors Day, swimming 29.71 in the 50 backstroke. Another Jumbo victory came from first-year Sarah Mahoney (Excelsior, MN) in the 1,000 freestyle (10:55.38).
Tufts is at the Wheaton College Invitational next weekend (Feb. 1-2) in preparation for the start of the championship season with the NESCAC meet at Bowdoin Feb. 15-17.
