BREWSTER - The Tufts golf team slipped to 26th place out of 38 teams on the second and final day at the 79th Annual New England Intercollegiate Golf Association Championship Monday at The Captains Course.
Junior Sebastian Vik (Greenwich, CT) had shot four-over par 76 when Tufts was tied for 16th place after Sunday's round. Tufts' four best scores totaled 318 for 16-over par as a team. However, on Monday they accumulated 333 strokes to finish with a 651 total.
Junior Alex Zorniger (Dayton, OH) was the top individual finisher for Tufts. He also shot under 80 on Sunday with a five-over par 77. Zorniger shot 83 today for a 160 tournament total.
Sophomore Jay Wong (Darien, CT) scored 80 on Sunday and 82 today for a 162 final. Junior John Wawer (Litchfield, CT) had Tufts' best round on Monday at 81, paired with Sunday's 85 for a combined 166. Vick's 164 total was third for the Jumbos.
Division I Central Connecticut State University shot a two-day total of 597 to win the overall championship. They were three strokes better than runner-up University of Rhode Island. Day 1 medalist Monte Mullen of Central Connecticut took home the individual medalist honors by defeating URI's Joseph Leavitt on the second playoff hole. Both players finished the two-day
tournament with a one-under 143.
