SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - Junior Ann Bellinger (Arlington, VA) won her match in the fifth flight, but it was not enough as the women's squash team dropped its 2013-14 season opener at Mount Holyoke, 8-1. Bellinger beat the Lyons' Elyse Taylor, 11-5, 11-7, 11-8.
Sophomore Paget Stanco (Rye, NY) gave Mount Holyoke's Radima Ranaweera a challenge in the number one spot, losing 11-4, 11-7, 11-7. First year Lynn Cheng (Singapore) recorded ten points in her loss in the number two position, while fellow classmate Anna Bezahler (Philadelphia, PA) recorded 14 points in her loss in the number three flight.
Sophomore Tamara Gary (Exeter, NH) played in the fourth position but was topped by the Lyons' Katrina Intal, 11-7, 11-6, 11-1. In the number six position senior Caroline Howe (Carlisle, MA) put up quite a fight, losing to Allison Schilling, 11-8, 11-6, 11-9.
Juniors Sally Pratt (Groton, MA), Eleanor Monroe (New Canaan, CT) and Rachael Jackson (Woodinville, WA) played in the seven, eight and ninth positions, respectively, but none of the three were able to overcome their Mount Holyoke counterparts.
The Jumbos will return to action on Saturday when they take on Brandeis at 3:30 pm and will close out their opening weekend of play with a 12:00 pm match against Williams on Sunday.
