MIDDLEBURY, VT - The Tufts men's swimming & diving team won 10 events, including two each by senior diver Johann Schmidt and sophomores Michael Winget and Anthony DeBenedetto, to open their 2013-14 season with a pair of wins in a tri-meet at Middlebury College on Saturday.
The Jumbos won handily against the host Panthers, 216-84. The final team score against Connecticut College was 170-124 Jumbos.
Tufts started strongly by winning the 200 medley relay to open the meet. Winget, Drew Berman, Eric Douglas and John Devine combined on a 1:35.99 time.
Head coach Adam Hoyt's Jumbos would win each of the first four events. Senior Christian Jones took the 1,000 freestyle by 0.28 with a 10:01.21 touch. In the 200 freestyle, DeBenedetto earned his first victory in 1:46.50 with sophomore Cam Simko right behind him (1:46.64). Winget then won his first in the 100 backstroke with a 51.89 time.
DeBenedetto was the first to double, timing 1:54.50 in the 200 butterfly. Freshman William Metcalfe, who would later win an event, placed second (1:55.88).
Schmidt and freshman teammate Matt Rohrer went 1-2 in both diving events. Off the one-meter board, Schmidt was first with a 295.28 score and Rohrer was the runner-up at 257.40. In three-meter diving later in the meet, Schmidt's 326.93 was first followed by Rohrer's 225.60 points.
After Winget won the 200 backstroke with a 1:55.34 finish, the Jumbos would cap their performance with two freshman victories. In the 200 breaststroke, Greg Spiropoulos touched in 2:11.16 for his first collegiate win. William Metcalfe's 1:58.44 then won the 200 individual medley.
Winners DeBenedetto and Spiropoulos both had runner-up swims as well. DeBenedetto touched in 4:53.18 in the 500 free and Spiropoulos had a 1:01.03 in the 100 breaststroke.
The Jumbos open up Hamilton Pool for a new season next Saturday against Keene State starting at 1 pm.
