MEDFORD - Senior diver Johann Schmidt won off both boards, and two freshmen won races for Tufts, but it wasn't enough as the Jumbo men's swimming & diving team lost 178-122 to Keene State in Tufts' home opener at Hamilton Pool on Saturday.
Schmidt scored 314.82 to take the one-meter competition. He then put together a three-meter program that resulted in 375.95 points for first place. Freshman Matth Rohrer was the runner-up off the one-meter board (267.45).
Greg Spiropoulos and William Metcalfe continued to show their promise as freshmen. Spiropoulos was first to the wall in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:12.60 touch. Metcalfe later won the 100 butterfly with a time of 52.49 seconds. He was also second in the 200 individual medley at 1:59.68.
Sohomore Michael Winget, the reigning NESCAC Performer of the Week, posted a first and two seconds for the Jumbos. He won the 100 backstroke in 53.03 seconds, then had runner-up efforts in the 200 backstroke (1:57.58) and the 100 butterfly (53.38).
Four others were second-place finishers. Senior Christian Jones had a 10:07.32 in the 1,000 freestyle. Sophomore Anthony DeBenedetto added a second in the 200 butterfly with a 1:57.21 swim. Senior Drew Berman touched second in the 50 freestyle (22.09) while sophomore Cam Simko was a strong second for the 500 freestyle with a 4:51.18 time.
Tufts had five firsts overall. They were second in both relays (200 medley and 200 freestyle).
Head coach Adam Hoyt's Jumbos will compete at the MIT Invitational December 6-7 to conclude the first semester.
