Cam Simko anchored the fourth-place freestyle relay

CAMBRIDGE - A strong performance in the 200 Fly led the Tufts University men's swimming team to a third-place finish at the MIT Winter Invitational meet at MIT's Zesiger Athletic Center.
Sophomore Anthony DeBenedetto captured third place in the event with a time of 1:51.86, while freshman William Metcalfe captured fifth at 1:53.85. Both times are NCAA B cuts. Freshman Gus Simms rounded out the Jumbos' scoring in the event with a ninth place.
The Jumbos took third of eight teams in the two-day event trailing the host institution and Keene State College. Tufts accumulated 607 points to 1322.5 for MIT and Keene's 980.5.
Tufts scored well in the Free relays with the "A" group composed of seniors Drew Berman, Austin Wood, sophomore Tanner Wiest, and junior John Devine placing fifth in the 400 meter event with a time of 3:11.08, and the "B" group finishing seventh at 3:13.90. The Jumbos also placed fourth and fifth in the 800 Free relay with senior Christian Jones, and sophomores Debenedetto, Michael Winget, and Cam Simko pacing the "A" group at 7:05.29 and Metcalfe, Berman, Wood and senior John Devine finishing just behind at 7:08.24.
Winget stroked to a 1:54.12 finish in the 200 Backstroke which was good for fifth place. Metcalfe was a fifth place finisher in the 100 Fly at 50.82.
The 200 breast was also a strong event for Tufts as freshman Gregory Spiropoulos placed sixth at 2:08.54 and junior Justin Choi finished eighth in 2:12.58.
Senior Johann Schmidt and frosh Matthew Rohrer turned in strong performances off the one and three meter boards. Schmidt took second in both events and Rohrer was fourth in the three meter and fifth off the one meter board.
The meet concluded the first semester portion of the schedule. Tufts will next take to the water at home against MIT on January 18.
