MIDDLETOWN, CT - Junior diver Johann Schmidt (Nanuet, NY) was edged by Amherst's Colin White for the one-meter diving title, but his second place was the top showing by the Tufts men's swimming & diving team on the first day at the NESCAC Championships hosted by Wesleyan.
Schmidt, the two-time defending conference champion in one- and three-meter diving, and White had finished first and second respectively in the NESCAC diving events for the previous two seasons. On Friday however, White's 542 score overcome Schmidt's 533.35 in the one-meter final to earn him his first conference title.
The second-place performance by Schmidt helped Tufts score 366 points on Friday to place fifth with two more days of the conference meet upcoming. Amherst is first (686), Williams is second (678), Middlebury is third (390.5), and Connecticut College is fourth (381.5) ahead of the Jumbos.
Two Tufts relays had fifth-place efforts on Friday. The 200 freestyle foursome of sophomore John Devine (Oxford, MA), freshman Harry Wood (Fort Washington, PA), junior Andrew Turk (Westlake Village, CA), and junior Austin Wood (Fort Washington, PA) timed 1:25.34 for fifth. Turk and Austin Wood then swam the second and anchor legs respectively in the 400 medley relay joined by freshman Michael Winget (Shelburne, VT) leading off and Anthony DeBenedetto (Hopkinton, MA) third for a 3:26.34 finish that was fifth.
Winget also recorded an individual fifth place with his time of 23.96 seconds in the 50 backstroke.
