SHENANDOAH, TX - Tufts junior diver Johann Schmidt (Nanuet, NY) added two All-American honors to his portfolio after placing third in three-meter and fifth in one-meter at the 2013 NCAA Div. III Championships this week.
Schmidt posted the second-best NCAA finish of his career on Saturday night in the three-meter event. After placing sixth in the preliminaries earlier in the day with a 492.10 score, he improved to 539.30 on Saturday night for third place. Kalamazoo sophomore William Guedes won the three-meter national championship with a 572.50 score, while Gabe Dixon from Denison was the runner-up (547.90).
On Thursday night, Schmidt totaled a score of 479 to place fifth in the NCAA one-meter event. Benjamin Lewis from Denison won the national championship with a 494.65 score. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps sophomore James Stevick was a close second (493), and Guedes took third (491.55).
Schmidt had been first after the one-meter preliminary round earlier in the day. He compiled a score of 495.55 points to top the field of 24.
Making his third NCAA appearance in as many years, Schmidt now owns five All-American awards (top eight) and one honorable mention All-American honor (places 8-16) for his career. In addition to winning the NCAA one-meter championship in 2012, he placed fifth in three-meter last year. Schmidt was also sixth in three-meter and 12th in one-meter at the 2011 NCAA's. He also has five conference titles (three in three-meter, two in one-meter) to his credit.
With the 30 points scored by Schmidt in the NCAA diving events, Tufts as a team was 27th at the meet.
