MIDDLEBURY, VT - Three players shot under 80 as the Tufts golf team was tied for 11th out of 22 teams overall following the first day of play at the annual Duke Nelson Invitational hosted by Middlebury College on Saturday.
John Wawer's (Litchfield, CT) 75 (36-39) on the par-70 Ralph Myhre Golf Course led the Jumbos, whose best four scores totaled 311 to tie for 11th with Elms and Manhattanville. Jay Wong (Darien, CT) at 77 (36-41) and Alex Zorniger's (Dayton, OH) 78 (36-42) were the other top scores for the Jumbos.
Matt Lesnik (Princeton, NJ) and Brendan Koh (Singapore) both came in with 81's for Tufts.
Hamilton College led the event after the first round with a 291 total. Rob Donahoe of host Middlebury carded a two-under par 68 to lead individually.
Play resumes on Sunday at 9 am.
