MIDDLEBURY, VT - The Tufts golf team placed 14th out of 22 teams at the two-day Duke Nelson Invitational hosted by Middlebury College on Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday, three players shot under 80 as Tufts was tied for 11th after the first day of play with a best-four total of 311. However, they slipped to 320 strokes on Sunday for a 631 total. They were three strokes out of 11th place, where Manhattanville placed with a 628 score.
John Wawer's (Litchfield, CT) 75-76-151 led Tufts and tied for 21st individually out of 114 players total. He was 11-over par on the par-70 Ralph Myhre Golf Course.
Jay Wong (Darien, CT) at 77-76-153 placed second for the Jumbos and tied for 28th individually. Alex Zorniger's (Dayton, OH) 78-82-160 in third for Tufts and 65th overall was the other top score for the Jumbos.
Matt Lesnik (Princeton, NJ) and Brendan Koh (Singapore) both came in with 81-86-167 for Tufts.
Wawer's 75, Wong's 77, and Zorniger's 78 were the team's top scores on Saturday. Wawer and Wong had 76's on Sunday as Tufts was sub-80 five times for the weekend.
Host Middlebury, second after the first day, surged to win the tournament with a 292-304-596 final. Rob Donahoe of Middlebury carded a two-under par 68 on Saturday and added a 71 on Sunday to win medalist honors with a 139 two-round score.
The Jumbos play at the Williams Invitational next weekend (Sept. 21-22).
