Tufts Golf Takes Sixth at 2013 NESCAC Championship Qualifier

BRUNSWICK, ME - Sixth after the first day and within striking distance of earning one of four spots into the NESCAC Golf Championship next spring, the Tufts Jumbos would not improve their position on Sunday in the conference qualifier at the par-72 Brunswick Golf Club.

The Jumbos, whose best four scores totaled 318 on Saturday, finished at 323 on Sunday for a two-day 641 that was sixth overall.

On Saturday, sophomore Jay Wong (Darien, CT) led the Jumbos with a 76, tying for eighth place. Junior John Wawer (Litchfield, CT) was second for Tufts and tied for 18th overall with a 78. Junior Sebastian Vik (Greenwich, CT) and sophomore Brendan Koh (Singapore) with 82's also scored for Tufts.

Both Wong and Wawer shot 77's on Sunday to finish among the top 20 individually for the weekend. Wong's 76-77-153 was eighth. Wawer's 78-77-155 tied for 12th.

Middlebury closed out the weekend with a team score of 303 to win the NESCAC Golf Championship Qualifier with a total score of 595. With the finish, the Panthers have earned the right to host the NESCAC Golf Championship on April 26-27 at the Ralph Myhre Golf Course in Middlebury.

Middlebury entered the day with a 14-stroke lead after a red-hot 292 on day one. The Panthers cooled off a bit on day two with a 303, good enough to earn a 17-stroke win over Trinity (612). Amherst (619) and Williams (622), who rounded out the qualifying teams.

Junior John Louie (Salinas, CA) paced Middlebury with rounds of 70 and 75 to capture medalist honors with a score of 145 (+1). Senior teammate Rob Donahoe (Canton, MA) finished one shot back at 146 (+2) after firing a 76 today.

Trinity was the model of consistency, posting 306 for the second-straight day to finish with a team score of 612. Sophomore Jeff Durkin (Scituate, MA) led the Bantam effort after turning in identical rounds of 74 for a final score of 148 (+4).

Amherst, which carded the day's best team round at 302, jumped from fifth to third with a two-day total of 619. Sophomore James Line (Glastonbury, CT) paced the Lord Jeffs rounds of 77 and 75 for a two-day score of 152 (+8).

Williams slipped one spot in the standings moving from third to fourth after turning in a team score of 315 for a weekend total of 622. Seniors Cody Semmelrock (Pomfret Center, CT) and Dylan Deither (Williamstown, MA) turned in two-day rounds of 155 (+11) each to pace the Ephs.

Colby and Hamilton tied for seventh, as both posted final scores of 648. Bates came in ninth (656), while Wesleyan was tenth (724).
