BROOKLINE – The Newbury College men's basketball team fell to non-conference Tufts University, 89-43, Tuesday evening. First year center Hunter Sabety (Oceanside, NY) led five in double-figures with a game-high 13 points, seven rebounds and two blocks en route to the Jumbos' seventh victory of the season.
Tufts sophomore guard Stephen Haladyna (South Hamilton, MA) registered five of the Jumbos first seven points to take a quick 7-0 advantage less than two minutes into the contest. But the Nighthawks responded. Senior guard Eric Watson (New Rochelle, NY) capped off a 7-1 run, knocking down a mid-range jumper at 16:14 for his 1,000th point of his collegiate career to cut the deficit to one, 8-7.
Moments later, Watson found first year guard Ceejae Carter (Dorchester, MA) at the perimeter for a three-point jumper to give the Nighthawks their first and only lead of the game, 14-12. However, the lead did not last for very long as the Tufts offense started to fire on all cylinders. Sabety led three Jumbos in double figures, tallying a half-high 11 points as they went on a 38-5 run to take a commanding 50-19 lead into the locker room.
When the teams returned to the court at the start of the second half, the Jumbo offense remained red-hot and showed no signs of letting up. Junior guard Ben Ferris (Essex Junction, VT) registered seven points to finish tied with Sabety for a game-high 13 points while first year guard Tarik Smith (Bronx, NY) came off the Tufts bench, four minutes into the period, to net all eight points in the second half. Senior guard Kwame Firempong(Los Angeles, CA) and sophomore forward Zach Roswold (Batavia, IL) rounded out the Jumbos in double figures, tallying 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Carter led the way for the Nighthawks, registering double figures for just the second time this season netting 10 points while junior guard Mills Carrasco (Haverhill, MA) was right behind with eight points – six in the second half. Watson and junior forward Christian Sheridan (Chicago, IL) followed up with seven points a piece.
Newbury falls to 0-13 following the loss while Tufts improves to 7-6. The Nighthawks return to New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action on Thursday January 16th when they travel up Route 3 for an 8:00 pm tilt against Daniel Webster College while the Jumbos return to the hard-court on Friday, January 17th when they host sixth-ranked Amherst College at 8:00 pm in Medford, Mass.
