Freshman Gus Simms had one of five Tufts victories

CAMBRIDGE - Senior diver Johann Schmidt and sophomore freestyler Cam Simko both won two events, but the Tufts men's swimming & diving team lost 190-110 at MIT on Saturday afternoon.
Jumbos won five events overall, including one by freshman Gus Simms in the 200 butterfly. There were also four runner-up efforts by Tufts competitors.
Simko recorded the first Tufts win in the 200 freestyle, touching the wall in 1:43.45, edging MIT's Daryl Neubieser (1:44.19). Simko would later add a 500 freestyle victory (4:45.53), winning by a comfortable 2.24 seconds.
Schmidt continued his progress through the 2013-14 season by taking both diving events easily. He scored 314.09 to win one-meter and 364.87 for first in the three-meter event. Jumbo freshman Matt Rohrer was teh runner-up in one-meter with 282.98 points.
Simms' 1:54.53 win in the 200 fly was backed up by a 1:55.34 for second place by sophomore Anthony DeBenedetto.
Senior Christian Jones had an early second-place finish for Tufts, timing 9:50.38 in the 1,000 freestyle. Senior Drew Berman had the other Jumbo second, recording a time of 48.01 seconds in the 100 freestyle.
DeBenedetto and Berman added to their runner-up performances with third-place efforts. In the 200 free, DeBenedetto showed with a 1:45.61 finish. Berman's third came in the 50 free (22:10). Freshman William Metcalfe had a pair of thirds for the Jumbos, in the 100 butterfly (52.81) and the 200 individual medley (1:59.22).
The meet was the first action of the spring semester for the Jumbos, who dropped to 2-2 with the loss. They are back in the pool tomorrow at Wesleyan for a 1 pm NESCAC meet.
