CAMBRIDGE - Sophomores Sarah Mahoney and Laura Cui both won a race and had a runner-up placement as the Tufts women's swimming & diving team lost 213-80 at MIT on Saturday afternoon.
Mahoney won the first individual race of the afternoon when she took the 1,000 freestyle in a 10:54.97 time. Soon after that, Cui won the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.65 as Tufts got the meet off to a good start.
Cui would follow up her win with a second-place touch of 2:31.08. Mahoney's second-place came in the 500 freestyle, where she swam a 5:23.69 time.
Both Mahoney and Cui's victories were strongly supported by teammates. Junior Amanda Wachenfeld placed second in the 1,000 freestyle with an 11:00.34 time. The Jumbos went 1-2-3 in the 100 breaststroke as first-year Sarah Elghor was second (1:10.89) and senior Ellen Gage took third (1:12.04).
First-year diver Kylie Reiman scored a second and a third. She was the runner-up in three-meter with a 229.35 score and the third-place finisher in one-meter with a 252.52 total.
The Jumbos also had a third from junior Samantha Sliwinski in the 200 freestyle, where she touched in 1:58.10.
The meet was the first of the spring semester for the Jumbos. They will get right back at it tomorrow at Wesleyan in a 1 pm NESCAC meet.
