MEDFORD - Sophomore Michael Winget won two backstroke events in the Tufts University men's swimming & diving team's 209-165 loss at Division I Boston College on Tuesday night. Twenty events were competed in the meet.
Winget had two of Tufts' seven victories overall. He touched first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 52.39 seconds. He then earned the double by capturing the 200 backstroke with a 1:55.82 finish.
Four Jumbos had wins combined with a runner-up performance for the Jumbos. In the 200 freestyle early in the meet, Cam Simko was second in 1:44.64. He earned his victory later in the 500 freestyle (4:50.97). William Metcalfe's efforts came late in the meet, first with a win in the 100 butterfly (52.48 seconds) and then with a 200 individual medley second-place time of 2:00.93.
Senior Christian Jones scored the first Tufts victory of the night with a 10:05.74 time in the 1,000 freestyle. His second came behind Simko in the 500 freestyle (4:51.74). Senior diver Johann Schmidt won the three-meter event with a 345.45 score after placing second in one-meter (267.07).
The other Jumbo victory was posted by sophomore Anthony DeBenedetto, who reached the wall in 1:55.72 in the 200 butterfly.
Senior Drew Berman finished with a pair of second-place swims. He timed 21.78 seconds in the 50 freestyle and 47.73 seconds in the 100 free.
The Jumbos went 1-2 in three events. Besides Simko and Jones in the 500 free, sophomore Tyler Lueck backed up Jones in the 1,000 free with a 10:14.39 touch for second. Freshman Guss Simms was behind DeBenedetto in the 200 fly (1:57.48).
Freshman Greg Spiropolous added a second in the 200 breaststroke (2:13.08) to the Jumbo score.
Now 3-3 in dual meets, Tufts competes in their last of the season on Saturday at Wheaton.
