NORTON - Divers Jonathan Schmidt and Matt Rohrer placed one-two in both the one and three meter disciplines to help lead Tufts University to a 205-119 victory over Wheaton College in the Clark Athletic Center pool in Norton, Massachusetts today.
Schmidt, a senior and an All-American, scored a 355.05 off the three meter board and followed up with 336.07 from one meter. Freshman Rohrer tallied a 320.48 from three meters and 304.42 from the lesser height.
Tufts got the meet off to a flying start when the 400 yard medley relay team consisting of sophomore Michael Winget, senior Drew Berman, freshman William Metcalf, and sophomore Cam Simko taking the meet's first event by 8.4 seconds over the Wheaton College "A" team. The quartet covered the distance in 3:33.57.
The relay was the start of big days for Berman and Simko. Berman had first place finishes in the 200 free in 1:46.84 and the 200 breast with a time of 2:16.76, while Simko captured the 200 individual medley in 2:00.20 and the 200 fly with a time of 1:59.65. Both other members of the 400 medley relay also had an additional first place finish with Winget taking the 50 back (24.94) and Metcalfe winning the 100 free (49.59). Winget was also second in the 200 individual medley and Metcalfe placed second in the 200 meter free.
Sophomore Anthony Debenedetto and junior Ian Dinwoodie took first and second in the 1000 free. Debenedetto's 10:03.7 was 22:22 better than Dinwoodie. Greg Spiropoulos led a Tufts sweep of the top three spots in the 50 Breast with a time of 28.84.
In an unusual quirk, the Jumbos Tyler Lueck and David Amirkhanashvili tied in the 50 yard free mixed time trial. Lueck, who also placed second in the 100 free, is a sophomore and Amirkhansahvili is a frosh. In the 100 free time trial, senior Matthew Weins went out in 51.30 to take the event.
The Jumbos will next take to the water competitively on Friday evening when they travel to Vermont for the Middlebury Invitational.
