Harry Wood anchored the winning 200 medley relay for Tufts |
MIDDLEBURY, VT - Junior tri-captain Michael Winget won both backstrokes and led off the first-place 200 medley relay to lead the Tufts men's swimming & diving team in its season opener today at Middlebury College.
The Jumbos split the tri-meet with the host Panthers and Keene State College. Tufts defeated Middlebury 191-103 and lost to Keene State 162-136.
The 200 medley team led off the meet with a Tufts victory. Winget was followed by freshman Morgan Ciliv, sophomore William Metcalfe and junior Harry Wood for a 1:36.03 winning time.
Winget would follow up with a 51.68 victory in the 100 backstroke and later a 1:55.84 time to place first in the 200 back. In the final event he led off the 200 freestyle relay with freshman Panos Skoufalos, junior tri-captain Cam Simko and Wood in the anchor again for a runner-up 1:28.22 finish.
Junior diver Matt Rohrer opened well, winning both events. His scores were 322.50 in three-meter and 323.55 in one-meter. Both were national qualifying scores right out of the gate for the 2013 NCAA competitor.
The Jumbos had seven victories in the 16 events overall. Sophomore Jasper Du narrowly beat Keene's Nathan Shepard to the wall in the 200 breaststroke, 2:15.58 to 2:15.94. Metcalfe, like Winget an NCAA qualifier last season, was first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 52.25 seconds.
Junior Anthony DeBenedetto nearly won in the 200 butterfly. His 1:56.75 time was three-tenths of a second off the winning pace set by Keene's Cole Hogg (1:56.42). Jumbo sophomore Gus Simms was third in the race with a 2:02.51 finish.
The Jumbos were second and third in the 200 individual medley as well. Freshman Zachary Wallace was the runner-up (2:01.39) and Metcalfe took third (2:01.48). Ciliv and Simko also had individual thirds in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.46) and 100 freestlyle (48.84), respectively.
