CAMBRIDGE - First-year Anna Kimura swam to a fifth-place finish in the 200 breaststroke highlighting the Tufts women's swimming & diving team's efforts at the three-day MIT Winter Invitational Friday through Sunday.
Kimura posted a time of 2:29.21 in the 200 breast on Sunday, when Tufts jumped into fifth place in the final team standings at the meet. They had been seventh after Saturday.
Kimura also swam the third leg of the 200 medley relay that led off Sunday with a seventh-place finish. First-year Kelsey Gallagher, junior Laura Cui and sophomore Sophia Lin joined Kimura to post a 1:53.27 time.
Sophomore Amanda Gottschalk had an individual seventh and was party of a relay seventh for the Jumbos in earlier action. On Friday, she swam the second leg of the Jumbo 800 freestyle relay that was seventh at the meet with an 8:05.68 time. She was joined by senior tri-captain Amanda Wachenfeld in the lead, junior Sarah Mahoney third and senior tri-captain Kathryn Coniglio as the anchor. Then on Saturday, Gottschalk timed 4:47.06 to place seventh in the 400 individual medley.
Tufts had eight top-eight finishes overall, including four on Sunday. Cui was the eighth finisher in Saturday's 100 breaststroke, reaching the wall in 1:08.50. Gallagher notched an eight-place showing in the 200 backstroke on Sunday (2:14.81). Tufts closed Saturday's portion with a 4:08.93 for eighth in the 400 medley relay. The foursome was first-years Gallagher, Meghan Casey and Kimura with Coniglio. The 400 freestyle relay of first-year Jess Lee, Lin, senior tri-captain Scarlett Hao and Coniglio also finished Sunday's racing with a 3:48.26 time for eighth.
In the team scoring, Tufts was ahead of Harvard, Wheaton and Bowdoin while finishing behind first-play MIT, Wellesley, SUNY New Paltz and Keene State. This was the last competition of the fall semester for the Jumbos.
