NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Senior tri-captain Christian Sbily and junior Tom Ryan combined on a five-hit shutout as the Tufts baseball team won for the second time in little more than 12 hours this morning with a 3-0 victory over Saint Vincents College (PA) at the Apprentice School.
The Jumbos, who opened their season with a 7-1 victory against Castleton in a game that ended around 10 pm Friday night, were up bright and early to start a two-game Saturday at 9 am against the Bearcats. Tufts later faces local foe MIT at Apprentice School in a 3 pm start.
Sbilty went seven innings allowing four hits and three walks while striking out five. Only one Saint Vincent runner reached third base against him. In the fifth, Bearcat freshman Chris Winkler led off with a single and then Sbily walked senior Joey Fearer. However a 5-4-3 double-play and a foul out to right negated the threat. The Bearcats also had two runners on with one out in the seventh including another Winkler single, but Sbily closed his outing with a fly to center and a pop to third.
Ryan allowed a one-out double to freshman Brennan Hoffer in the eighth, but stranded him and earned a save with two scoreless innings.
Saint Vincent pitching was good as well, as freshman starter Greg Martin held the Jumbos scoreless through four. Martin worked 6 2/3 innings, scattering eight hits. Dustin Welsh and Chris Storm each threw well in relief.
Tufts broke through In the fifth. Sophomore SS Matt Moser led off with a single and then junior 1B James Howard was hit by a pitch. After sophomore RF Cody McCallum sacrificed the runners over, Petry delivered a double to left for a 2-0 Jumbo lead.
Tufts increased the margin to 3-0 when McCallum led off the seventh with a single and stole second. Petry sacrificed and then junior CF Connor McDavitt recorded his fourth rbi of the season with a sacrifice fly.
Of Tufts' nine hits, Moser was 3 for 4 with a run and freshman LF Oscar Kutch was 2 for 5.
