DARTMOUTH - The Tufts golf team was five strokes better as a foursome on Saturday than they were on Friday, but it didn't move them up in the team standings at all as the Jumbos placed 14th out of 18 teams at the Hampton Inn Invitational hosted by the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth at the par-72 Allendale Country Club.
On Friday, the Jumbos' four-best scores totaled 351 strokes to tie for 14th place with Worcester State. They improved to a 346 on Saturday, but their 697 total remained 14th overall.
Sophomore Brendan Koh, who won medalist honors last weekend at Rhode Island College's tournament, led Tufts on Friday with an 83. He shot 85 to tie for the Tufts lead on Saturay, and his 168 for two rounds tied for 34th individually. Eighty nine players started the tournament.
Freshman Owen Elliott scored second for the Jumbos with an 86 on Friday and tied with Koh for team honors at 85 on Saturday. His two-round total of 171 was 47th.
Freshman Ben Ruskin at 89-88-177 and senior David Carson at 93-88-181 also scored on both days for the Jumbos.
Amherst College took both the team and individual victories. Their excellent 314 score on Saturday gave them a total of 634 strokes to win the tournament by five over Rhode Island College. Josh Moser of the Lord Jeffs shot 73 on Saturday to win the tournament with a +8 152.
