WILLIAMSTOWN - Sophomore Owen Eliot shot two-under par 73 on Sunday for a two-day total of 149 strokes that tied for seventh individually as the Tufts golf team competed at the annual Williams Invitational.
The Jumbos placed 11th out of 19 as a team. Their four best scores added up to 310 strokes on Saturday and 315 on Sunday for a 625 final total. They were three shots back of ninth-place Trinity (622) and two in front of 13th place Rhode Island College (627).
Freshman Taylor Nordan led the Jumbos on Saturday with a 75, one of three Tufts rounds under 80. Eliot shot 76 and junior Brendan Koh came in at 77, while senior captain Alex Zorniger scored fourth for Tufts at 82.
Nordan added a 77 on Sunday to compile a 152 total for the weekend, tying for 18th overall. Zorniger's 80 was third on the Jumbo roster for Sunday and gave him a 162 for the tournament.
Rochester Polytechnic Institute (RPI) charged from seven shots back to win the tournament (304-294=598) by two shots. Skidmore College (307-293=600) and Williams College's A team (297-303=600) both played stellar final rounds, but finished the day trailing RPI. Due to a tiebreak, which was determined by each team's highest score, Skidmore claimed the runner-up spot. Middlebury College (305-299=604) and St. Lawrence (299-309=608) rounded out the top five.
James Jackson of RPI backed up his outstanding first round of 70 with a 75 on Sunday (70-75=145), which was good enough to capture the individual title. Jack Whelan (71-75=146) of St. Lawrence and Tim Manwaring (76-70=146) of Skidmore College tied for second place, missing out on a playoff with Jackson by one shot. The tournament included 94 players overall.
