Simko, Rohrer Win Twice as Men's Swimming & Diving Faces MIT

MEDFORD – Junior tri-captain Cam Simko and sophomore Matt Rohrer won two events each as the Tufts men's swimming & diving team competed in its first home meet of the season at Hamilton Pool against MIT Saturday.

Sean Gunn was one of three Jumbos honored on Seniors Day

Simko beat MIT's Michael Lu to the wall by 0.28 of a second in the 200 freestyle, winning with 1:45.84 time. He later earned a more comfortable winning margin of over two seconds with a 4:48.12 finish in the 500 freestyle.

Rohrer dominated the diving events for the Jumbos. He compiled a 310.20 to win one-meter by more than 50 points. His 370.05 score in three-meter produced an even greater margin of victory (82 points). Both scores are NCAA provisional qualifying marks.

The Jumbos had several runner-up performances, starting with the 200 medley relay to lead off the meet. Junior tri-captain Michael Winget, freshman Morgan Ciliv, sophomore William Metcalfe and freshman Lorenzo Lau combined on a 1:36.42 time.

Included in a good start to the meet for Tufts, freshman James McElduff preceded Simko's 200 freestyle win with a runner-up touch in the 1,000 freestyle (10:09.69). The Jumbos got another second when freshman Panos Skoufalos timed 22.70 seconds for the 50 freestyle.

Ciliv contributed second- and third-place points individually. His runner-up effort came in the 200 breaststroke, where he posted a 2:15.65 time. Earlier, his 1:00.99 was third in the 100 breast and just a half-second out of second place.

Metcalfe nearly won the 100 butterfly, but was edged at the finish by MIT's Thomas Norris. The winning time of 52.46 seconds was only 0.08 faster than the 52.54 recorded by the Jumbo sophomore. Fellow sophomore Luca Guadagno was the runner-up in the 400 individual medley at 4:19.51. Jumbo freshman Zachary Wallace was third in that event (4:19.67).

Freshman diver Aaron Idelson was second behind Rohrer in the one-meter event with a 253.05 score.

MIT earned a 199-101 victory in the meet. In addition to winning both relays, the Engineers received a pair of wins from Alexander Lednev (100 back, 400 IM) and Dougie Kogut (200 fly, 200 back).

Tufts celebrated Seniors Day with the meet. The Jumbos thanked Sean Gunn, Mike Napolitano and Josh Norville for their hard work over the years.

The Jumbos are in action again tomorrow when they host NESCAC foe Wesleyan at Hamilton Pool in a 1 pm start.
