MEDFORD - The Tufts women's swimming & diving team earned several second- and third-place finishes, but it wasn't enough as visiting Wellesley College won 14 events and earned a 184-116 victory at Hamilton Pool Wednesday night.
Senior tri-captain Kathryn Coniglio and first-year Anna Kimura both had victories and multiple other top-three finishes to lead the Jumbos in scoring. Kimura took the 100 breaststroke with a 1:09.89 time and Coniglio was fastest in the 100 freestyle in 55.48 seconds.
Coniglio was just shy of another victory when her 1:58.21 time was just 0.13 behind Wellesley's Charlotte Harris (1:58.08) in the 200 freestyle. Coniglio was also the runner-up in the 50 freestyle at 25.88 seconds. Kimura added thirds in the 100 butterfly (1:01.13) and the 200 individual medley (2:16.03) to her victory.
Sophomore Sophia Lin offered strong support behind Coniglio in the freestyle sprints. She was second behind her teammate in the 100 with a time of 56.27 seconds. In the 50 free, Lin touched one tick after Coniglio with a 25.89 finish.
Junior Sarah Mahoney and sophomore Amanda Gottschalk both posted a pair of runner-up performances. Mahoney's came in the distance freestyles as she clocked an 11:08.92 in the 1,000 and a 5:29.91 in the 500. Gottschalk's 2:30.13 was second in the 200 breaststroke and later she was in front of Kimura in the 200 IM at 2:15.95 for second.
Tufts' two relays placed second. The 200 medley race to lead off the meet had Jumbos Kelsey Gallagher, sophomore Sarah Elghor, Kimura and Lin swimming a 1:54.93. The 400 free relay foursome which finished the meet with a 3:44.05 was Coniglio, first-year Jess Lee, Lin and senior tri-captain Amanda Wachenfeld.
Gallager added an individual runner-up effort to her night with a 200 backstroke finish of 2:15.21. Wachenfeld had an early third in the 1,000 free touching the wall behind Mahoney with an 11:16.72 finish.
Other thirds came from senior tri-captain Scarlett Hao in the 200 free (2:02.15), first-year Meghan Casey in the 100 breast (1:11.14), junior Maddie Golison in the 200 butterfly (2:19.70), first-year Ali Dorneo in the 200 back (2:17.54), first-year Zoe Gregorace in the 500 freestyle (5:32.02) and sophomore diver Kylie Reiman in the three-meter event (237.75).
The Jumbos had two of the top three finishers in eight events overall.
Among the 14 Wellesley College victories, Dorothy Ren earned a trifecta with firsts in the 100 backstroke, 100 butterfly and 200 IM.
Tufts swims next at Wheaton College in a 1 pm dual meet on Saturday.
