Freshman Chris Flynn had wins in the 100 and 200 butterflies |
MIDDLEBURY, VT - Freshman Chris Flynn won the 100 and 200 butterfly events to lead the Tufts men's swimming & diving team at the non-scoring Middlebury Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
Flynn edged Middlebury's Stephan Koenigsberger in the 100 with a time of 51.75 seconds to the Panther's 51.79. Later in the 200, Flynn had nearly a one-second margin of victory with his 1:55.17 time. Jumbo sophomore Gus Simms was third in that race (1:57.47).
Tufts won three times overall in the meet featuring teams from Middlebury, Springfield, Tufts, Vermont and Williams. Freshman Morgan Ciliv had the other, leading a 1-2 Tufts finish in the 100 breaststroke with a touch of 1:00.72. Sophomore Michael DeCortin was the runner-up in that event with a 1:00.95 finish.
A pair of second-place efforts were posted by sophomore diver Matt Rohrer. He scored 450.60 in one-meter diving and 482.33 in three-meter. Both scores were behind only Williams College's Rohan Bhatt. Jumbo junior tri-captain Michael Winget also earned a second in the 200 backstroke at 1:55.08.
Tufts had two relay thirds. The 800 freestyle foursome of Flynn, Simms, freshman Lorenzo Lau, and freshman Scott Simpson combined on a 7:21.09 finish. The 400 freestyle relay group of junior tri-captain Cam Simko, freshman James McElduff, Lau and freshman Panos Skoufalos swam 3:15.31.
DeCortin also had an individual third in the 200 breaststroke (2:12.62). Freshman Jacob Siegelbaum was also a strong performer for Tufts with fourths in the 200 individual medley (1:59.10), 100 backstroke (53.66) and 200 back (1:55.41) as well as a relay fourth with the 200 medley (1:39.58)
This was the final regular-season competition for head coach Adam Hoyt's team. The Jumbos compete in the NESCAC Championships at Middlebury February 20-22.
