Harvey-Brown Goal Pushes Women's Soccer Past UMass Boston, 1-0

Box Score

SOMERVILLE -- Mariah Harvey-Brown scored the game-winning goal early in the first half as the Jumbos held on to beat the Beacons 1-0 on Tuesday afternoon at Kraft Field.

Mariah Harvey-Brown scored her first goal of the season

With the win, Tufts improves to 6-5-2 on the season (4-3-1 NESCAC) with two regular season matches remaining, both against conference opponents. UMass Boston falls to 4-11-1 with three games remaining.

The Jumbos dominated play throughout, ignited by three shots from Jess Capone to start the match. In the 15th minute, Taylor Koscho served the ball into the six to a wide open Harvey-Brown, who headed the ball into the back of the net for just the fourth shot of the game, and Harvey-Brown's first goal of the season. Following the game's lone goal, Tufts continued to control play with shots from Alex Scheman and Chandler Quintin. The Beacons, who did not record a shot until 25 minutes into the match, tried to capitalize on four Tufts fouls, but could not connect. Their best chance came in the final minutes of the half, as an Alex Levesque shot grazed the crossbar and soared over the goal.

Both teams came out firing in the second, combining for ten shots in less than fifteen minutes. UMass' Jaclyn O'Grady had a clear look at the net, but Nicole Campellone was there to deflect the attempt. Minutes later, back-to-back looks from Quintin and Capone were denied, and immediately following, Quintin and Harvey-Brown almost added some Jumbo insurance. With time winding down, the Beacons amped up their attack, only to be disrupted by the Tufts defense, as Emily Bowers gobbled up an O'Grady bid, and a Levesque shot landed wide left.

Bowers finished the game with 5 saves, while Alyssa Fugiel recorded 12 for UMass. The Jumbos outshot the Beacons 27-13, and held a 5-1 advantage in corners.

Tufts wraps up the week at undefeated Williams on Saturday at 1:30pm, and UMass travels to Keene State for a 1pm start on Saturday.
