Jay Wong shot 80 to score second for Tufts

WILLIAMSTOWN - The Tufts Golf team sits nine strokes back of a qualifying spot in the NESCAC Championship after the first day of the conference qualifier Saturday at Williams College's Taconic Golf Club (par 71).

The top four teams at the qualifier earn beths into next spring's NESCAC Championship. The first-place team this weekend will host the conference championship in the spring.

The Jumbos' four-best scores totaled 325 today. Fourth-place Amherst came in at 316. Fifth-place and host Williams scored 323. Seventh-place Bates is closest behind Tufts with a 330 total.

Junior Owen Elliiott continued his consistent play in leading the Jumbos this fall, scoring seven-over par 78 today. That's tied for seventh individually. Senior co-captain Jay Wong finished at nine-over 80, second for Tufts and tied for 19th overall. Sophomore Taylor Nordan made his first start of the season and scored third for Tufts at 81. Senior co-captain Brendan Koh was the final Jumbo scorer with an 85.

Sophomore Aaron Corn is also in the Jumbos' line-up this weekend. He shot 89 on Saturday.

Middlbury College, whose five golfers all shot under 80, has a commanding 12-stroke lead entering day two on Sunday. The Panthers, who have a 300 team score, were led by Scott Guidotti three-over 74. He leads the field of 50 golfers.

Play resumes on Sunday at 9 am.
