MIDDLEBURY, VT - For a squad looking to be much-improved this season, the Tufts Women's Swimming & Diving team had a great start to 2015-16 at today's tri-meet hosted by Middlebury College. The Jumbos won nine events, including two each by junior Kylie Reiman, sophomore Anna Kimura and freshman Colleen Doolan.
In competition against good Middlebury and Connecticut College teams that placed third and sixth at last year's NESCAC Championship respectively, the Jumbos (7th at NESCAC's last year) narrowly lost to the Panthers 151-149 and defeated the Camels 152-142.
Kimura led great Tufts efforts in the breaststrokes. Her 1:08.76 won the 100 with junior Amanda Gottschalk second in 1:09.65 and junior Sarah Elghor fourth with a 1:10.30 time. Kimura and the Jumbos were even better in the 200, with her 2:26.79 leading a 1-2-3 finish. Gottschalk was the runner-up again (2:27.25) and Elghor took third (2:34.45).
Gottschalk and Kimura also teamed up for success in the 200 individual medley. Gottschalk's winning 2:13.54 time was two seconds ahead of Kimura's runner-up 2:15.79 finish.
Doolan had an impressive collegiate debut. Her 2:08.44 to win the 200 butterfly already makes her the second-fastest woman in Jumbo history. Only Christine Garvey, who holds the school record of 2:04.74, has finished faster. Doolan also won the 100 fly in a fast 59.32 seconds and was third in the 200 freestyle (1:57.77).
Reiman won the one- and three-meter diving events as the divers played a big role in the win over Connecticut College. She scored 204.45 in one-meter to win in a field of five. Her victorious three-meter total was 208.25.
The Jumbos won both backstrokes. Freshman Caroline McCormick took the honors in the 100 with a 1:02.11 time while sophomore Kelsey Gallagher was first in the 200 (2:14.73).
Tufts closed the meet with a third in the 200 freestyle relay as junior Sophia Lin, freshman Sydney Nasson, senior tri-captain Sarah Mahoney and sophomore Jess Lee swam 1:40.76.
The Jumbos return to action at the MIT Invitational on December 4-5.
