Women's Swimming & Diving Finishes Semester with Dominating Performance

Sophia Lin sprinted to a 50 freestyle victory for Tufts

MIDDLETOWN, CT - The Tufts Women's Swimming & Diving team had a deep, dominating performance while sweeping a tri-meet hosted by Wesleyan with WPI on Friday night. The Jumbos had the top times in 14 events.

Fifteen Jumbos in all had top-three peformances at the meet including 10 who won events. Tufts earned a 184-123 victory against WPI and recorded a 172-126 final over the host Cardinals.

Freshman Colleen Doolan won the 500 freestyle (5:18.45) and the 100 butterfly (1:00.49) before posting the top time of 2:11.55 in the 200 fly late in the meet when Tufts was not countng its scores towards its final total. They did that in the final four of 17 events and still won comfortably.

Similarly, sophomore Anna Kimura's 2:25.66 in the 200 breaststroke as an exhibition late in the meet was one of the team's top performances. She also won the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.97 and was second in the 50 fly (27.62).

Sophomore Kelsey Gallagher was first in both the 100 and 200 backstrokes with times of 1:02.71 and 2:13.16, respectively. Earlier, freshman Caroline McCormick was the winner of the 50 backstroke touching in 29.32 seconds. She was also second just 0.04 behind Gallagher in the 100 back and took third in the 200 back (2:18.41).

Junior Sarah Elghor started the meet with a 31.93 win in the 50 breaststroke and added a 1:08.75 for second behind Kimura in the 100 breast. Junior Sophia Lin raced to a 25.33 victory in the 50 freestyle while also scoring third in the 100 freestyle at 55.94 seconds.

Sophomore Jess Lee was a tick in front of Kimura to win the 50 fly (27.60) early in the race. Junior Amanda Gottschalk posted a winning margin of more than 10 seconds with her 4:40.86 in the 400 individual medley. Freshman Maddie Maider posted the first victory of her collegiate career in the 200 freestyle (2:01.39), as did classmate Larisa Kokubo in the 100 freestyle (55.12). Freshman Sydney Nasson touched right after Maider for second in the 200 free at 2:02.36.

Junior Kylie Reiman posted scores of 203.60 in one-meter diving and 209.80 in the three-meter event. The foursome of Kokubo, Lin, freshman Alexandra Good and Doolan swam 1:42.88 in the 200 freestyle relay.

This was the final action of the fall semester for the Jumbos. Tufts will next be in competition on January 16 in a tri-meet at MIT with Wellesley.
