Jinn Breaks 1,650 Freestyle Record on 1st Day of MIT Invitational

New 1,650 freestyle record-holder Brandon Jinn

CAMBRIDGE - Freshman Brandon Jinn set a new team record in the 1,650 freestyle to highlight the Tufts University Men's Swimming & Diving team's opening day at the MIT Invitational on Friday night.

Jinn swam 16:00.22 to improve upon the eight-year old team mark of 16:02.85 by Greg Bettancourt from 2007. Jinn was third at the meet where Tufts is competing with the host Engineers, NYU, SUNY New Paltz, Wheaton and Keene State.

Senior tri-captain Michael Winget nearly set another Tufts mark during the 800 freestyle relay. His 1:41.33 200 leg was just fractions of a second off the Jumbo mark. Bettancourt holds that record as well at 1:41.28 from 2006. Winget was joined by Jing, freshman Kingsley Bowen, and senior tri-captain Cam Simko for a 6:40.64 final time. They were fifth in the race.

Sophomore Aaron Idelson placed second in three-meter diving with a 439.45 score which narrowly missed the NCAA provisional mark (440).

Tufts is third as a team with 117 points behind MIT (158) and NYU (142). The MIT meet continues on Saturday and Sunday.
