CAMBRIDGE – The Tufts women's squash team opened play in the College Squash Association's Team Championships on Friday afternoon. Playing in the Epps Cup, the Jumbos topped Haverford, 7-2, to move on in the D division bracket.
The Jumbos won in the first through seventh positions to advance to face Connecticut College on Saturday at 3:00 pm. The Jumbos are 2-1 against the Camels so far this year, with both of those wins coming in the month of February.
Junior tri-captain Paget Stanco took the courts in the first position and topped her Haverford counterpart, Isabelle Gotuaco, in three games (11-9, 11-6, 11-6). Senior tri-captain Paige Dahlman had little trouble in the second position, as she was able to earn a three game win over Bethany Simmonds, 11-4, 11-1, 11-9. Playing in the third position, first-year Claudia Udolf also turned in a three game win, topping Alexandra Love (11-6, 11-7, 11-5).
Senior tri-captain Ann Bellinger allowed her Black Squirrel opponents just ten points across three games in the fourth position, collecting the three game win. First-year Lauren Banner allowed her opponent just one point more in the fifth position, winning in three games over Samara Flug. The match in the sixth position was also similar to those two, as sophomore Anna Bezahler allowed her Haverford counterpart 11 points over three games in a win for the Jumbos. The last Jumbo win came from first-year Gabi Salomon in the seventh position, as she was able to best Emily Berlin (11-5, 11-9, 11-3).
Rookie Nellie Harvey played in the eighth position and battled Grace Fioramonti-Gorchow four games, but fell (11-6, 6-11, 11-7, 11-7). Junior Hannah Park played an even closer match in the ninth position, taking Avery Weisel to five games, but unable to win the last (5-11, 9-11, 11-5, 11-9, 11-9.
The Jumbos will now move on in the D division bracket to face Connecticut College on Saturday at 3:00 pm. If they win they will face the winner of the match between William Smith and Mount Holyoke on Sunday at 1:00 pm for the championship of the division.
