NORTH DARTMOUTH - Sophomore Owen Elliott and freshman Taylor Nordan both shot 76 to lead the Tufts Golf team on the first day at the Westport Hampton Inn Invitational hosted by UMass Dartmouth on Friday.
Head coach Bob Sheldon's Jumbos are tied for third out of 17 teams heading into the second day. Tufts' four best scores totaled 321 strokes, tying with the host Corsairs. Rhode Island College leads after day one with a 314 score. Second-place Endicott is at 320. Fifth-place Salem State came in at 322.
Elliott consistently made par on 13 holes for Tufts, tying for the most out of 85 total golfers. Nordan's three birdies were second most in the field. Their 76's were four over par and are tied for fifth individually.
Senior captain Alex Zorniger also scored for Tufts with an 82 and junior Brendan Koh was the fourth Tufts scorer with an 87.
Rhode Island College's Josh Unkrich shot one-under par 71 to lead individually after one day.
Play continues at the par-72, 6,764-yard Allendale Country Club tomorrow.
