Elliott Third Individually, Golf Team Ties for Eighth at Westport Hampton Inn Invitational

Sophomore Owen Elliott placed third at the Wesport Hampton Inn Invitational

MEDFORD - Sophomore Owen Elliott finished third individually, but the Tufts Golf team dropped into a tie for eighth place in the final standings at the 17-team Wesport Hampton Inn Invitational hosted by UMass Dartmouth on Friday and Saturday.

The Jumbos had been third after Friday's round, as Elliott and freshman Taylor Nordan both shot 76 and Tufts' four best scores totaled 321 strokes. Though Elliott shot 77 on Saturday to finish at 153 (nine over), the other Jumbos scored in the high 80s for a team total of 343 on Saturday.

Tufts finished with a 664 total score, tied with host UMass Dartmouth for eighth. Fifth-place Amherst College was just two strokes ahead at 662 in a tightly-contested tournament. Rhode Island College won with a 314-327-641 final.

Elliott's two-day 153 was behind only individual medalist Greg Martin from Husson, who shot 73-77-150 to win, and second-place John Unkrich from Roger Williams (71-80-151). A total of 86 golfers started the tournament.

Nordan tied for 23rd overall after shooting 89 on Saturday for a 165 total. Senior captain Alex Zorniger was 82-89-171 for the weekend and junior Brendan Koh, who scored second for Tufts on Saturday with an 88, finished at 175.

The tournament was played at the par-72, 6,764-yard Allendale Country Club.
