CORTLAND, NY – The nationally fifth-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team scored four of the game's final five goals to pull away for a 14-8 win versus 10th-ranked Tufts University Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at the Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons improved to 12-1 on the season with the win, while the Jumbos dropped to 9-4.
Junior Ashley Gentile led the Cortland offense with four goals, three in the first half. Senior Emma Hayes-Hurley tallied three goals and one assist, and junior Nicole Bello also netted three goals. Junior Tara Monaghan and sophomore Kristen Ohberg each recorded two goals and one assist, and senior Marilyn Farrell contributed two assists.
Sophomore goalie Jaclyn Beshlia turned aside four shots, all in the second half. Gentile collected four ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers, Hayes-Hurley won eight draws and Monaghan secured three draws.
Junior Caroline Ross paced the Tufts offense with three goals and one assist. Senior Kali DiGate scored a pair of goals and junior Brigid Bowser and first-year Jenn Duffy and Calie Nowak each netted a goal. First-year Hannah Wiltshire started in goal, stopping one shot in 37:10 before giving way to senior Rachel Gallimore, who made four saves over the final 22:50.
The Red Dragons built a 5-1 lead just before the midway point of the first half, highlighted by a three-goal run from Gentile. After DiGate made it a 5-2 game, Cortland took an 8-2 advantage as three different players found the back of the net. The Jumbos closed the half with a goal by Duffy at 3:13 and DiGate's second score just before the horn, and the Red Dragons led, 8-4.
Ross sandwiched a pair of goals around a Bello score to bring Tufts to within 9-6 with 22:50 remaining in the game. Ohberg and Nowak then traded goals and Cortland led 10-7 with 7:56 on the clock. The Red Dragons took control of the game with a three-goal burst in just over two minutes for a 13-7 lead. Hayes-Hurley, Gentile and Ohberg each netted unassisted goals during the stretch. Ross's third goal of the game at 2:41 cut the lead to 13-8, but Hayes-Hurley finished off the scoring with her fourth goal of the game with four seconds on the clock for the 14-8 final.
