Tufts Golf Wins Wildcat Spring Invitational with Nordan Finishing as Medalist

Freshman Taylor Nordan was the individual medalist at the Wildcat Spring Invitational

CRANSTON, RI - The Tufts Golf team won its first tournament since October 2007 by capturing the Wildcat Spring Invitational hosted by Johnson & Wales University on Saturday and Sunday. Freshman Taylor Nordan led the Jumbos as the top individual at the event.

Tufts had led after one day with a four-man total of 300 strokes. Their four-best combined for 310 on Sunday to finish at 610 overall. That was four strokes ahead of Williams College, who finished as the runner-up with 308-306-314 scores.

Nordan shot 71 on Sunday after a 74 on Saturday to win the tournament with a 145 two-round total. He edged Nichols College's Kevin Wheeler, who shot 75-71-146.

Jumbo sophomore Owen Elliott shot 71 on Saturday to lead four Tufts players who finished in the 70s as the Jumbos sat in first place after the first day. He finished his second round at 80 for a 151 total that tied for seventh individually.

Freshman Michael Lefkowitz, making his first appearance of the spring, shot a +5 76 to tie for 12th on Saturday and then added an 80 on Sunday for a two-day 156. The fourth Tufts scorer on both days was junior Jay Wong with a pair of 79s for a 158 final.

All four of Tufts' scorers finished among the top 30 in a tournament consisting of 104 golfers.

The first-place finish is Tufts Golf's first since winning the Husson Tournament in Maine October 7-8, 2007. Nordan is the second Jumbo golfer in as many years to finish as the medalist at a tournament. Teammate Brendan Koh won the Rhode Island College Spring Invitational in April 2014.

The victory caps a successful spring season for head coach Bob Sheldon's Jumbos. They also tied for fifth out of 17 at Rhode Island College April 3-4 and tied for eighth among 17 teams at UMass Dartmouth on April 10-11.

The tournament was played at the par-71, 6,495-yard Cranston Country Club.
