Capone Goal Lifts Women's Soccer Over Connecticut College in 2OT Thriller

Box Score

SOMERVILLE - Jess Capone scored her first goal of the season early in the second overtime period to lead the Jumbos to a 1-0 victory over the Camels in NESCAC action on Saturday afternoon at Kraft Field.

Emily Bowers earned her first career shutout with the victory

Tufts outshot the defending NESCAC champions 8-2 in both overtimes combined en route to the victory. Early in the second overtime, Jumbo forward Alex Scheman found herself open in the box twice, and Capone was there for the second rebound, as she lofted the ball over Camel keeper Amanda Onofrio.

The previous halves showed a battle of two evenly matched, aggressive teams. It was back and forth throughout the first, with each team having ample opportunities to score. Stefanie Brunswick made a beautiful cross early on, and Nicole Campellone had a wide open shot just inside the eighteen, but the Jumbos could not finish either. Their best chance came in the 37th minute, when an Alex Aronson free kick soared high over the goal – the result of a Camel handball just outside the eighteen. Five minutes later, Conn. responded with a few shots of their own, but stalwart keeper Emily Bowers and the Jumbo defense denied the looks.

The second half saw much of the same, as both teams took 10 shots, resulting in an almost identical number of saves for the two goalies. Conn. started with a good run, and the Jumbos almost finished crosses from Sarah Pykkonen and Scheman. A few minutes later, Bowers gobbled up a crafty Annie Higgins header. Then in the 79th minute, a Camel penalty kick landed just wide of the left post and Bowers' outstretched arms. As the clock wound down in regulation, Alessandra Sadler almost found her way to the goal through multiple Camel defenders, but to no avail.

Bowers was outstanding in net, and earned her first shutout of the season and her career behind 10 saves. Bryanna Montalvo made 8 for the Camels.

The Jumbos (2-2, 2-1 NESCAC) closeout a week of conference matches tomorrow at 12pm against Trinity at home. Conn. (0-2-1, 0-1-1 NESCAC) travels to Waterville to take on Colby at noon.
