Owen Elliott shared medalist honors with teammate Aaron Corn

BOSTON - Junior Owen Elliott and sophomore Aaron Corn both shot even-par 70 to tie for first place individually and lead the Tufts Golf team to first overall at the 11-team Newbury College Nighthawks Invitational played on the William J. Devine Golf Course at Franklin Park today.

All five Jumbos who played finished in the top 20 out of 56 golfers overall. Tufts' best-four score of 287 was 10 better than second-place Babson (297). Third-place Nichols College finished at 303. The Jumbos scored +7 as a team.

Elliott and Corn both won the first tournaments of their collegiate careers. Corn's four birdies was tied for the most on the day.  Elliott made 12 pars and eagled the 11th hole.

Also for Tufts, sophomore Michael Lefkowitz shot one-over 71 to tie for third individually. His 13 pars were the most of the tournament. Senior co-captain Jay Wong was the final Tufts scorer with a +6 76 tying for 11th. Sophomore Glenn VanWinkle also shot well for the Jumbos with a 78 that tied for 17th. Like Elliott, Wong and VanWinkle eagled the 533-yard, par-five 11th.

This is the second tournament Tufts has won in 2015. Head coach George Pendergast's Jumbos were first out of 21 teams at the Johnson & Wales Invitational in Cranston, R.I., last April 18-19.

Up next for the Tufts is the NESCAC Qualifier at Williams College's Taconic Golf Club October 3-4. They need to finish among the top four to advance to the NESCAC Championship which will be played in the spring.
