CAMBRIDGE - Wellesley College earned an 8-1 victory over Tufts in a match-up of top 25 women's squash programs played at MIT on Wednesday night.
Visiting Wellesley, ranked #22 by the College Squash Association, improved their record to 8-4 with their fourth consecutive win. The #24 Jumbos lost for the first time in five matches to drop to 6-5.
The lone Tufts winner was freshman #7 Sahana Karthik in four games. She lost the first 11-9 before winning the next three 11-4, 11-4, 11-5.
Two of the games were decided in five. At #2, Jumbo freshman Zarena Jafry lost a back-and-forth contest to Phyllis Lin. Jafry won 12-10 in the second and 11-7 in the fourth to tie the score twice, but lost the fifth 11-7. Freshman Hannah Burns also went back-and-forth with Meera Nayar before falling 11-5 in the fifth game.
The Jumbos also had a four-game loss by freshman Sinclair Meggitt at #5. Down 2-0, she won 11-5 in the third before losing 11-4 in the fourth. Sophomore Claudia Udolf waged a very competitive battle in a three-game loss at #4 (11-9, 12-10, 11-9). Freshman Isabella Libassi also scored well in three games with an 11-7, 13-11, 11-7 loss at #9.
Tufts is at Colby on Saturday for a 1 pm NESCAC match.
