WENHAM, Mass.—Fourth-ranked Tufts flexed its offensive might with a sound 6-0 victory over Gordon Field Hockey on Thursday evening at the Brigham Athletic Complex. The Jumbos scored twice in the first 10 minutes of regulation and never looked back en route to their 11th victory of the season.
The Fighting Scots had their two-game win streak snapped and dip to 7-9. Gordon's tough slate continues on Saturday when they host No. 9 Babson on Saturday at noon. Tufts (11-2) will look to hold off No. 20 Williams in Medford on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Tufts controlled the match in its offensive zone for the majority, tallying up 36 shots and 25 on frame. Mary Kate Patton (Lake Bluff, Ill.) put the first goal in the board in the fifth minute after a Gordon foul gave the Jumbos a penalty stroke. The junior beat keeper Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) high to the right to claim a 1-0 lead.
Two minutes later, Annie Artz (Gates Mills, Ohio) put home her 10th goal of the season on a nice set play. Erin Sanders (Katonah, N.Y.) found Artz open at the far post and sent a strong ball for the one-timer.
The Jumbos added another goal late in the first period when Mary Travers (Princeton, N.J.) slammed in a high pass from Rachel Hamilton (Newton, Mass.). Travers had taken the penalty corner and snuck back into the middle of the circle to tap a ball from over her head into the goal.
Hicks made six saves in the first half before giving way to Anastasia Landman (Cheswick, Pa.) in the second half.
Tufts continued its scoring trend approaching the halfway mark of the second period with Marguerite Salamone (Yardley, Pa.) finishing off a rebound. Landman made a nice save for the Scots on the play, but the ball bounced in the air where Salamone batted it into the wood on the back side of the net.
Shannon Yogerst (San Diego, Calif.) added her second goal of the season in the 53rd minute off of a nice pass from Celia Lewis (Houston, Texas), before Sarah Schaeffler (Timonium, Md.) finished things off with a second penalty stroke goal in the 60thminute.
Tufts held a 21-1 advantage in penalty corners and did not allow a shot to be taken.
Gordon's trio of goalkeepers held their own despite the pressure, making 19 saves on the day. Rookie Julia Altman (Hopkinton, Mass.) was credited with her first career stop.
