MEDFORD, Mass. – The Tufts University women's swimming & diving team excelled in the final event of its season opener, as it claimed 13 of 17 points in the 400-yard freestyle relay en route to defeating Middlebury, 156-144, on Sunday in Medford, Massachusetts.

The Jumbos held a 143-140 advantage heading into the final event of the day, and then the squad's "A" team featuring senior captain Sophia Lin, freshman Hannah Truslow, sophomore Alexandra Good and sophomore Colleen Doolan collected a first-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:40.81), adding a crucial 11 points to the Jumbos' point total. The Panthers "A" relay team, featuring freshman Frances VanderMeer, junior Stephanie Andrews, freshman Olivia Mitchell and senior Morgan Burke claimed second-place honors, which was good for four points. The Jumbos "B" team, featuring freshman Olivia Leoni, junior Jess Lee, freshman Brooke Bernstein and sophomore Christiana Hug, tallied a third-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay, giving the squad another pair of points.
The Jumbos collected six first-place finishes on the individual side and recorded one first-place finish in a relay event during the season-opening dual meet. The squad also posted 10 second-place finishes in individual events, while tallying one second-place finish in a relay event.
Freshman Grace Goetcheus, senior captain Amanda Gottschalk, Doolan and Lin competed together in the 400-yard medley relay, as the group posted a second-place finish with a time of 4:02.53. Junior Kelsey Gallagher, junior Meghan Casey, sophomore Tessa Garces and Bernstein finished third overall in the 400-yard medley relay.
Lin finished first overall in the 50-yard freestyle (25.06) and second in the 100-yard freestyle (55.51). Gottschalk, an All-American and All-NESCAC team selection last season, placed first overall in the 200-yard individual medley (2:13.15), second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.55) and second in the 50-yard breaststroke (31.43).
Doolan, who was an All-American honorable mention and an All-NESCAC team selection as a rookie last season, finished first overall in the 100-yard butterfly (59.60) and third overall in the 50-yard butterfly (27.63). Goetcheus performed sensationally in her collegiate debut, as she placed first overall in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.01), second in the 50-yard backstroke (28.82) and second in the 200-yard individual medley (2:15.46).
Gallagher finished in a tie for second overall in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.02), while tallying a third-place finish in the 50-yard backstroke (29.64). Bernstein collected a third-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (56.07), while senior Sarah Elghor recorded a third-place finish in the 50-yard breaststroke (32.34).
Freshman Rica Generoso made her presence felt, as she finished second overall in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.64) and second in the 50-yard butterfly (27.52). Lee performed well in the 50-yard freestyle (25.82), as she was the third swimmer to touch the wall.
Next on the radar for the Jumbos is the MIT Invitational on Dec. 2-4 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
