BIDDEFORD, ME - Tufts University overcame 29.2 percent shooting from the floor to come away with a 61-49 victory over Regis College (MA) in a first-round game of the 2016 NCAA III Women's Basketball Championship played Friday evening at the Harold Alfond Forum on the campus of the University of New England.
The Jumbos (24-3) advance to face Moravian College, a 70-60 winner over host UNE in the second game of the evening. Regis ends its season with a mark of 24-4.
Lauren Dillon scored 14 points to pace Tufts. She was 8-for-10 from the free throw line and also dished out nine assists. Melissa Baptista chipped in 11 points before fouling out with 3:52 to play, and Emma Roberson finished with 10 points and six rebounds.
The Pride's Amanda Hawkesworth had 20 points to lead all scorers, including a 10-of-12 performance from the free throw line. Brittany Stone posted a double-double with 14 points and 14 boards.
The Jumbos, who led from start-to-finish, forced 25 Regis turnovers. The Pride trailed by six (55-49) with just under two minutes remaining, but Tufts would convert 6 of 8 free throw attempts down the stretch to seal the victory.
Tufts and Moravian will play tomorrow (Saturday) evening at 6 pm.
