A 79 by Nik Nugnes helped bolster the Jumbos on Sunday |
BREWSTER - Three Jumbos shot in the 70s as the Tufts University golf team stands ninth out of 19 teams after one day at the 2017 New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championship played at par-72 Captains Course on Sunday.
With their best four scores totaling to 312 strokes, the Jumbos are just four strokes out of fifth place where Endicott College sits after scoring 308 on Sunday. Tufts is eight in front of 10th-place Bates College (320).
Sophomore Brandon Karr led the Jumbos on Sunday with a four-over par 76. He's tied for 13th individually. Second for the Jumbos and tied for 20th overall is junior Justin Feldman, who shot 77 on Sunday. Senior Nik Nugnes stepped up and fired a 79 to score third. The fourth and final Tufts player to score was freshman Henry Hughes who came in at 80. Freshman Alex Honigford also played for the Jumbos and carded an 83.
Today's round was played on the Port Course. Tomorrow's second and final round will be held at the Starboard Course. The Jumbos will tee off at 9:15 a.m.
Husson University has a five-stroke lead after one day as the only team to combine for a sub-300 score on Sunday. They are at 298 strokes, followed by Rhode Island College at 303. Husson's Daulton Wickenden is the individual leader after 18 holes with a three-under 69. He is three strokes ahead of second-place Jason Raichle from Springfield, who shot an even-par 72.
Tufts came from ninth place on Sunday to tie for fourth place at this tournament last season.
This is the 83rd NEIGA Championship, as well as the final fall event on the Tufts golf schedule.
