BREWSTER - Sophomore Brandon Karr shot a one-under par 71 on Monday to lead the Tufts University golf team on the second day of the 2017 New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championship played at the Captains Course.
The Jumbos finished seventh overall out of 19 teams at the two-day tournament. After totaling 312 with their four-best scores on Sunday, the Jumbos lowered their team total on Monday by four strokes to 308. That moved them up from ninth place at the end of Sunday to their seventh-place finish. Tufts' 620 tournament total was two behind sixth-place Endicott College (618). The Jumbos' 308 score was sixth-best among all teams on Monday.
Karr's 71 on Monday was the third best individual score for the day. Combined with his +4 76 on Sunday, Karr finished the tournament with a two-round total of 147. Three over for the weekend, Karr placed fourth individually among 92 golfers overall.
Freshman Henry Hughes scored second for Tufts on Monday with a four-over 76. Classmate Alex Honigford with an 80 and junior Justin Feldman at 81 also scored for the Jumbos on Monday.
Hughes' two-day 156 (+12) was second for Tufts and tied for 30th. Feldman scored on both days for Tufts and finished at 158 (+14) for the weekend. Honigford's 80 on Monday was three strokes better than his Sunday score as he finished with a two-round 163 (+19). Senior Nik Nugnes, who shot 79 to score for Tufts on Sunday, had an 84 on Monday to also record a tournament total of 163.
Husson University ran away with the NEIGA title. Their 288 score on Monday was six strokes better than anyone else and added to the five-stroke advantage that they enjoyed at the end of Sunday. Husson's two-day 586 score was 11 ahead of runner-up Rhode Island College (597).
Daulton Wickenden from Husson held on to medalist honors. Leading by three strokes after shooting a three-under 69 on Sunday, he scored 73 on Monday to finish at a two-under 142. Austin Cilley from Rhode Island College came in with a four-under 68 on Monday, but finished one stroke behind Wickenden with a 143 total.
The NEIGA event was the last of the fall season for Tufts. They will resume their 2017-18 schedule in April.
