MEDFORD, Mass. – The Tufts University women's swimming and diving team wrapped up the MIT Invitational in third place out of seven teams. The Jumbos finished with an overall team score of 1065. NYU took first with a 1269.5 and MIT came in second with a 1195.5. RPI, Wheaton, Wellesley, and Keene State were also in attendance.
The competition started Friday and ended Sunday night with Tufts competing in events on all three days.
A team of Grace Goetcheus, Katherine Brown, Sasha Fong, and Abby Claus were the top finishers for the Jumbos in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:47.63. Fong took fourth place in the 100 butterfly with a 57.64. Goetcheus came in first in the 200 IM with a 2:09.70, beating the second place finisher by almost three seconds.
Rhys Empey took sixth place in the 500 freestyle with a 5:07.77. Jackie Crater came in second in the 200 backstroke with a 2:03.43. The time broke the Tufts school record and was an NCAA B cut. The previous school record was held by her teammate Grace Goetcheus from 2016. In the 200 breaststroke on Sunday at MIT Anna Kimura took second overall with a 2:21.04.
Claus, Fong, Katherine Sweetser, and Colleen Doolan competed in the 400 freestyle relay and finished as the top Tufts team with a 3:37.99.
On the weekend, Crater and Goetcheus earned the most individual podium finishes. Crater had two second place efforts, first on Saturday in the 100 backstroke and then on Sunday in the 200 backstroke. Goetcheus claimed first place today in the 200 IM.
The squad will travel to Wesleyan this Saturday to compete in a meet along with WPI and Williams.
