Sophomore Brandon Karr shot was one over par for the weekend |
MIDDLEBURY, VT - Led by sophomore Brandon Karr's one-over par 143 for the weekend, the Tufts University golf team placed fifth out of 22 teams at the 34th annual Duke Nelson Invitational held at the par-71 Ralph Myhre Golf Course at Middlebury College on Saturday and Sunday.
Tufts' four-best scores on Sunday totaled to 299 strokes. Added to their 297 score from Saturday, the Jumbos' 595 two-round total was behind only tournament champion Babson (572), Western New England (573), Trinity (577) and Williams (582). Sixth-place St. Lawrence scored 596, one behind Tufts. Head coach George Pendergast's Jumbos were third out of seven New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) teams at the event.
Karr had shot an even-par 71 on Saturday and followed that up with a team-best, one-over 72 on Sunday to lead Tufts. His 143 was tied for third overall among 113 golfers at the event.
Senior Taylor Nordan also carded a 71 on Saturday and then had a five-over 76 on Sunday for a 147 weekend total. That was second for Tufts and tied for 21st in the tournament. Also scoring for the Jumbos on Sunday were freshman Alex Honigford at 75 and classmate Harry Theodore with a 76. Honigford's two-day 149 (74 on Saturday) was tied for 28th individually. All five Tufts golfers shot under 80 on Sunday as senior Aaron Corn hit 79 for a two-day 159. Theodore finished the weekend with two-round 157.
Babson's Lane Bohman was two-under for the weekend with a 70-70-140 scorecard to win individual medalist honors.
The Jumbos play at the Williams Invitational at Taconic Golf Club next weekend (Sep. 23-24).
